Lizzo is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress who is a big supporter and advocate for body positivity. There has been circulating media of people “fat shaming” Lizzo or making insensitive comments regarding her body. I analyzed three different sources which included Twitter, AM2DM BuzzFeed News, and Nick Reed’s podcast. All three of these sources are different forms of media such as social media, TV, and radio.
Each source covers a different or new aspect of the body shaming Lizzo story. AM2DM BuzzFeed News covers the story behind Jillian Michaels insensitive comments on Lizzo’s body. Jillian Michaels said, “Why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? Why aren't we celebrating her music? 'Cause it isn't gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes." This news source digs deep into why Michaels would make such unkind comments.
On the other hand, Nick Reed’s podcast covers a different side of this story, yet still insensitive. In his podcast, he gives the outlook and perspective on the comments of Michaels in which he says that, “Jillian Michaels is making common sense, which is unacceptable, but kind of funny at the same time.” This story is agreeing with the standpoint of Michaels said, however, it delivers the news in a different way, with different aspects, and a different point of view.
Twitter is another media outlet that I analyzed regarding the Lizzo story. Twitter takes a different approach on the Lizzo story rather than the other forms of media. Lizzo’s fans dominate the body shaming comments on social media in which Michaels receives a lot of backlash. Unlike Reed, Twitter fans are holding Michaels accountable for what she said and letting her know that she should not be making comments like that about such a sensitive topic in society, especially among women. Nevertheless, Twitter fans are also there to be supportive of Lizzo as she deals with people making unkind comments on her body and her weight. Lizzo’s fans are coming at Michaels hard and they are pretty upset by the things she said and may be offended because they support the body positivity movement just as much as Lizzo.
Each form of media presents the story in various ways. They each bring new sides and perspectives of the Lizzo topic to different platforms of media. Twitter, AM2DM BuzzFeed News, and Nick Reed’s podcast are three different media outlets that present different sides as well as perspectives on the body shaming Lizzo story.
